Family & Parenting

Children today face many challenges and building the confidence and courage to push through those challenges will be essential for their growth. As parents we know it’s critical that we identify ways to help best instill in our kids among many characteristics self-confidence, integrity, and courage.

The Pew Research Center released an insightful study at the beginning of this year titled Parenting in America Today. The #1 reported concern for parents was mental health such as anxiety or depression in their children. In fact, 40% of parents in the survey reported being extremely or very concerned their children would struggle with these issues and 36% were somewhat concerned.

This was followed by 35% of parents saying they are extremely or very concerned over their children being bullied and another 39% somewhat concerned.

Additionally, 62% of respondents said being a parent is either a lot harder or somewhat harder than how they thought parenting would be, and more than four in ten parents describe themselves as overprotective.

While it’s interesting and insightful to see how parents answer these questions. The more important question is how as parents can we ensure our children are prepared to tackle mental health challenges and build their self-confidence.

My close friend and fellow father Nate Davenport and I wrestled with these same questions and decided to co-author a children’s book to help us and other parents instill these values through story format.

We decided to use my favorite animal and our national mammal, the bison! You see, when a storm is approaching instead of running away like most animals such as a cow would, bison choose to face the storm head on. They instinctively turn their bodies and heads towards the direction of the storm and do not run in fear. Not only are their bodies prepared for it with their thick fur and big heads, but they also know by running into the storm they will reach greener pastures sooner and minimize the amount of time in the storm itself.

Using this analogy we can teach children that challenges will come in life and many times they will have to choose the hard right over the easy wrong. They may want to quit on their school work, need to confront a bully, or speak in front of a group. Whatever the situation may be self-confidence and courage will be required. Many times in life they will need to embrace their inner bison and choose to FACE THE STORM.

Our book ‘Bryson the Brave Bison’ is published by Harper Collins (Zonderkidz) and illustrated by NY Times Best Seller Richard Cowdrey. It has already reached the Amazon #1 best seller list and is now available for pre-order. The official release is on June 27th.

On the Farm

This week on Silver Lake Bison Farm they began to install the horizontal geothermal lines in the ground.

Geothermal Lines

While the up front costs are typically higher for a geothermal HVAC system there are many benefits. Here are just a few to consider…

  • Long Lasting: Geothermal HVAC systems can last a very long time. There’s very little of the system exposed to elements that would cause corrosion or other wear and tear. Most of the system is housed indoors or in the ground.

  • Economical: You’ll save 30 to 60 percent on your heatings costs as well as 20 to 50 percent on your cooling costs compared to buying electricity to heat and cool your home with conventional heaters and air conditioners. In addition, federal tax credits up to 30% are available to homeowners who install certified geothermal heat pumps. Click Here for more details.

  • Reliable: Geothermal systems are reliable. They have fewer moving parts than many other alternative energy systems, and may include backup systems or even computer-based controls for more precise operation.

  • Quiet: The process of heat exchange from above ground to below ground is silent. You don’t have to have a loud air conditioner running in the summer or deal with the sound of a heater in the winter. The indoor portion of the system is about as loud as an everyday refrigerator.

If you want to dig in further watch this YouTube video or check out this article here.

The installer of your geothermal system can also run a break even timeline to determine how many years it will take to break even on your system as compared to the traditional options such as electricity or natural gas.
