On the Farm

Itā€™s been an exciting year as we officially moved on to Silver Lake Bison Farm. We took a break from the newsletter to focus on all the tasks at hand and wanted to finally send you all an update on what weā€™ve been up to!

We knew it would take a lot of work, but isnā€™t anything worth doing in life šŸ˜ƒ. We were so excited this month to welcome the bison herd to the farm! We have a total of 6 bison in the herd. Bryson, the herd bull, is 18 months old and already weighs close to 800lbs šŸ˜³! Heā€™s a plains bison and was delivered to us from Cedar Stone Bison Ranch in Missouri, owned by a fellow EOD (bomb squad) veteran. His Daddy is named Atlas and has an award winning lineage. He weighs 1,680lbs and Bryson should end up being close to the same size!

Bryson and some of the ladies

Bryson is joined by his five ladies Esther, Foxy, Stormy, Annie and Oakley. Three calves that are around 6 months old and two yearlings at a year old.

They have seemed to integrated very well to their new home and Bryson already loves getting his cube treats in the mornings. We still canā€™t believe we actually have bison in our backyard! Nothing better than looking out your back window while having a coffee and seeing the herd. A vision that I (Luke) have had in my head for several years now and now itā€™s actually happening!

Backyard View!

We have so much to learn ahead about these magnificent creatures and A LOT of work getting the corral system in place and other necessary tasks. For this Christmas though weā€™re just so grateful for the blessing of a dream come true.

Megan has become the Silver Lake chicken lady, and we just started getting our first eggs this week! The flock is filled with 51 birds currently, 49 hens and two roosters. They live in their luxurious barndominium coop that we continue to upgrade and improve. Most recently we installed an automatic coop door that opens and closes at dusk and dawn automatically.

In fact, Megan, has been asked to be an ambassador for our favorite hatchery that we purchased the chickens from Meyer Hatchery. If you donā€™t follow the Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook page your missing out on following along with the fun!

We also welcomed two barn cats to the farm, Spot and Carrie, that the girls canā€™t get enough of! They are living the life in the barn with their cozy heated sleeping pad and the whole place to themselvesā€¦ for now! They seem to be earning their keep killing mice and ā€œprotectingā€ the space.

Lastly, we welcomed some piggies to the farm! There are five total but two of them will be ours to butcher. We were told these pigs are a combination of Idaho pasture and Mangalitsa. Porkchop and Bacon will make some yummy food someday!

We will have so many more updates for you as we continue to move forward and are excited to share our family farm adventure with you. Neither of us grew up on a farm or raising livestock, but we decided to sell our suburb home and build a homestead of our own. We hope your encouraged to pursue your own family dreams and forget about what anyone else thinks!

No matter what may be on your heart for your family and your future donā€™t be afraid to be BOLD and take action.
