On the Farm
Welcome 2024! We sure have had a cold week! Are you staying warm out there? This cold doesn’t even faze the bison herd. These animals are designed to endure and thrive in extreme cold weather climates. Bryson and his crew are enjoying their space and spend most their day napping by the hay or grazing the pasture for anything green they can find. Every once in awhile they get excited and put on a show chasing each other around doing the “bison hop” as we call it.
The herd especially loves their alfalfa cube treats. In fact, Bryson will already eat it out of our hands! Two of the ladies, Esther & Stormy, will venture close enough to do so as well. The three littles are still warming up, and trying to fight their way to the front. They all have great temperaments thus far and we’re looking forward to growing and learning with the herd.

“Pop” giving the herd their alfafa “treats”… I think they want more Pop!
Our next big project will be designing the layout and set up the Titan West corral system. This will be used to “work” the animals each spring and fall where they receive vaccinations, health checks, and anything else that may need done at the time. Bison require a heavy duty corral system that can handle their athletic and large frames. A big project indeed.

About the Herd
Bryson is 18 months old and weighs in at approximately 800lbs. His dad, Atlas, weights 1,680lbs and Bryson should grow to be very similar size. Amazing to think he will be twice his current size. Two of the females are yearlings (1 year old) and three of them are calves (7 months old). We wanted to start with a younger herd so that we can grow together and learn about raising these animals at the same time.
What about the chickens?
The chickens have started laying eggs! So far 14 chickens are laying, and the girls are loving collecting all the different colored eggs. The chicken lady, Megan, loves spending time in her coop and taking care of all her “fluffy ladies”.
Now that they are getting older we’ve also discovered there are some roosters emerging. So far they are 3 roosters and maybe a 4th. “Larry” the leader of the pack likes to strut his stuff and cock-a-doodle all around the coop. He may have to become a nice meal soon if he doesn’t quit attacking the girls.
We’re also excited to share that Silver Lake Bison Farm is an official ambassador for Meyer Hatchery. They are located in Polk, Ohio and provide all your chick poultry needs.
