On the Farm

The herd is living their best life here on the farm as they have become accustomed to their alfalfa cube treats and happy hellos from the family. I have to say it’s hard to beat sipping on a morning coffee and looking out the back window as the sun rises and the herd grazes.

These magnificent creatures each have their own personality, and we have much to learn in our journey raising bison.

The chickens have begun their laying here on Silver Lake Bison Farm and the eggs are becoming bountiful and colorful! We’ve enjoyed seeing the wide variety of colors being laid from different hens, and our oldest daughter has become an integral part of the “egg operation”.

If you’re around the Granville area and are interested in purchasing farm fresh eggs please respond to this email, message us on social media, or email us at [email protected]

Our oldest daughter is in charge of the egg business and it’s been a great way for her to start learning sales, customer service, and basic money skills. I know she’d be honored to share her eggs with you! They are $5/dozen and $9 for two dozen.

One of our newest projects on the farm is attempting to build a quail hutch in preparation of ordering a starter quail flock of 10 from Meyer Hatchery. We found the plans from Garden Coop here and look forward to seeing how things turn out. I can guarantee you it wont look as pretty as the picture below, but let’s just pray it works ha! The backyard quail coop will be much smaller than our backyard bison operation that’s for sure haha!

Quail Hutch Design

The two hutches combined can hold up to 16 quail (8 each). We look forward to raising these animals and sharing our journey with you. They have unique speckled eggs, and each quail actually has it’s own unique design each time it lays.

Quail eggs, although smaller in size compared to chicken eggs, are packed with nutrients and offer several health benefits. Here are five benefits of eating quail eggs:

  1. High Nutrient Content: Quail eggs are dense in essential nutrients such as vitamins A, B2 (riboflavin), B12, and D, as well as minerals like iron, calcium, phosphorus, and zinc. They also contain high-quality proteins, healthy fats, and antioxidants, contributing to overall health and well-being.

  2. Digestive Health: Quail eggs are known to be easily digestible due to their smaller size and softer shells compared to chicken eggs. They can be particularly beneficial for individuals with sensitive stomachs or digestive issues. Additionally, the nutrients in quail eggs can support digestive function and promote a healthy gut microbiome.

  3. Boosted Immunity: Quail eggs are rich in vitamins and minerals that are essential for a strong immune system, including vitamins A, B12, and D, as well as zinc. Regular consumption of quail eggs may help strengthen the body's defense mechanisms against infections and diseases, reducing the risk of illnesses.

  4. Improved Skin and Hair Health: The vitamins and minerals found in quail eggs, such as vitamin A, biotin, and zinc, play crucial roles in maintaining healthy skin, hair, and nails. These nutrients support collagen production, promote skin regeneration, and contribute to the overall health and appearance of the skin and hair.

  5. Cholesterol Management: Despite being high in cholesterol, quail eggs have a different cholesterol profile compared to chicken eggs. They contain higher levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, often referred to as "good" cholesterol, which can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, the lecithin content in quail eggs may aid in breaking down and metabolizing fats, potentially supporting healthy cholesterol levels.

It's important to note that while quail eggs offer several health benefits, moderation is key, especially for individuals with specific dietary restrictions or health conditions.
