On the Farm
This week we pre-purchased our first set of 25 chicks from Meyer Hatchery out of Polk, Ohio!
This hatchery is well known nationwide for their gender accuracy and reliability. Weāve heard great things, so stay tuned to the newsletter to see how they turn out.
The first chick delivery will be arriving at the beginning of August on our front door. We have lots of work over the next several months ordering and prepping the coop and run space!
We will continue to share thie journey and build out as we grow to having 40-50 chickens by the end of the 2023.

For this first order we went with three types of chickens. The first, Olive Eggers, will lay beautiful olive colored eggs.
They are a hybrid chicken that typically lay various shades of olive-colored eggs. These chickens are created by crossing a dark brown egg layer with a blue egg layer and will lay around 4-6 eggs per week.
They each look different and have varied colored patterns. Our girls are excited about being able to name and recognize each of them!

We also ordered another hybrid, Frizzle Easter Eggers, which can lay olive green to blue or even rose or brown colored eggs. Even more fun is that each chicken will be unique in color and look as well.
The kids are excited to name each of these frizzy ladies and watch what they turn into as they go from chick to adult.

The last chicken type we ordered is the Golden Buff. According to the hatchery this is a leader in the brown egg market and by far the most popular breed they sell.
Golden Buffs are known by many other names, such as Golden Comet, ISA Brown, Cinnamon Queen, Red Sex Link, and Red Star. This breed is favored for its large eggs and calm temperament.
We can expect 6+ large to x-large brown eggs each week from each of these hens and 395 eggs in the first 72 weeks of life!

All three of these breeds are calm in nature making making them kid friendly and tolerant to cold climates such as Ohio.
We look forward to sharing our chicken journey with you on the farm! We hope to have eggs locally for sale in 2024.
Parenting
Letās take a poll. We will share the results on our next newsletter!
Teaching children financial literacy as parents helps them develop good financial habits that will serve them well throughout their lives.
Here are just a few reasons why we should focus on this as parents in order to set our children up for success when they become adults.
The average credit card debt is $23,325 per person
1 in 4 Americans say they do not pay their bills on time
Only 21 states require high school students to take a personal finance class
44% of Americans in 2018 didnāt have enough money to cover a $400 emergency
In 2021 40% of people had less than $300 in their savings
The good news is there are so many great resources out there to help us educate our children.
One example, is a great new app launching this year that is called Gravy Stack, created for 8-18 year olds. They are on a mission to make learning financial literacy fun for kids. The founders are solid men and fathers that I have followed or met over the past several years. Click HERE to check out their website and learn more.

Children who learn financial literacy early on are more likely to make informed financial decisions and avoid the pitfalls of poor financial management later on. They also learn the value of hard work and delayed gratification, which are important skills that will help them achieve their long-term goals.
Donāt rely on the schools or educational systems to teach your children money skills. Itās up to us as parents.
One of the most significant benefits of financial literacy for children is that it sets them up for a lifetime of financial security. When children learn how to manage their money well, they are more likely to avoid debt, save for the future, and make sound investment decisions. This is something we all want for our kids.
If you enjoy board games here is another resource. Check out Robert Kiyosakiās, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, cash flow game by clicking HERE. This is another great way to teach them money skills while having fun at the same time.

Bison
Here are three facts about bison I bet you didnāt know!
Even though bison can weigh up to 2,000+ lbs they can reach speeds up to 35 mph. To put that in perspective Usain Bolt, the fastest man alive, reached 27.5 mph at his fastest.

You can judge a bisonās mood by its tail. If it hangs down itās usually calm. If itās standing straight up, watch out! It may be ready to charge.
The American Bison was named the national mammal of the United States on May 9, 2016
Meme of the Week

Product of the Week
With five kids 7 & under in the home we do anything we can to try and get them all to sleep and to stay asleep. One item we would not live without is the Hatch Rest sound machine. There is one in each room.
It is a sound machine that you can utilize through an app on your phone. It allows you to set the time it comes on and off daily along with choosing from an array of colors, brightness, and sounds.
When the color or sound changes in the morning it can signal to the kids that itās time to wake up. The kids love to choose the colors and it makes bedtime fun for them.
